Helvetia advocacy through the years

Ways that Helvetia citizens have kept Helvetia a place worth caring about

Going back over 100 years, Helvetia residents have stood up to various onslaughts from ill-suited attempts to develop Helvetia farmland. Different groups of citizens banded together over the past century in solidarity in opposing a wide variety of unwise proposals from our city, county and state.

  • Challenged the railroad from taking citizen's land - and won
  • Stopped a proposal to bury thousands of sheep carcasses (from New Zealand) on Helvetia farmland and forestland
  • Prevented the siting of three urban landfills on 900 acres in Helvetia
  • Appealed Washington County's approval of a subdivision on 68 acres of EFU (Exclusive Farm Use) farmland - and won
  • Defeated the state's proposed siting of a mens' prison on 300 acres of Helvetia farmland
  • Halted the state's proposal to site a women's prison on 328 acres of Helvetia farmland
  • Fought the designation of Urban Reserves on 9,000 acres of Helvetia farmland, reducing it to 600 acres
